University of Toronto - Master of Financial Insurance

3-semester graduate program in financial mathematics applied to insurance and risk
Location
Toronto, CA
The Department of Statistical Sciences at University of Toronto is home to the Master of Financial Insurance (MFI) program. Launched in September 2016, the MFI program addresses the growing industry demand for professionals with expertise at the confluence of Data Science, Insurance, and Mathematical Finance. Since its inception, the MFI program has rapidly expanded, producing highly sought-after professionals in sectors such as finance, insurance, fintech, pensions, and consulting. The 2024 cohort, carefully selected from a competitive pool of applicants, features 25 candidates with an acceptance rate of under 10%, maintaining a balanced gender distribution.

The MFI program exhibits a pronounced mathematical sophistication, and typically, eligible candidates possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a quantitative discipline, including but not limited to actuarial science, statistics, economics, mathematics, or engineering. Prospective students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in advanced mathematical concepts, encompassing multivariable calculus, linear algebra, probability theory, statistical analysis, and computational methods. Supplementary education in actuarial science, economics, and finance is regarded as a valuable asset.

The MFI is a three semester program. In the first two semesters, our students benefit from a dual educational approach: they receive theoretical instruction from globally recognized academics in the Department of Statistical Sciences, which ranks among the top 10 in the world according to the Shanghai Rankings. Simultaneously, they gain practical insights from accomplished industry professionals, enhancing their problem-solving skills and industry acumen. This blend of academic and industry exposure equips our students with unique insights and insider knowledge. During the third semester, students engage in experiential learning by undertaking an industrial internship.

The MFI program's name is slightly misleading: The 'insurance' in the title would maybe lead you to believe that it's an actuarial science program, but in reality the coursework is more suited to a financial engineering / quantitative finance degree (Actuarial science is only 1 course in the entire year).

The coursework is difficult. The more theoretical courses (Like mathematical finance, machine learning, etc) have a thorough amount of theoretical depth for the class content, while focusing on the application of theoretical concepts for assignments.

The professors are some of the best you'll ever be taught by: They are leading authorities in their respective fields and don't only have experience in academia, but in the industry as well. If you're struggling with coursework, the professors are more than willing to take time out of their day to assist you, which great helped my time in the program.

The career services are not a 'get a free job' pass. They give you the tools and set up as many interviews for you with their contacts as possible. You still very much have to look for your own opportunities and grind internship applications, but the internship coordinators will be more than willing to help.

Employability after the program is mostly what you make of it. Most people get jobs in banking, portfolio management, risk or data science. Even though the degree helps a ton with employment, you still need to make an effort in networking, applying and learning additional skills.

The students admitted into the program are generally intelligent and hardworking. Most of them are nice, and a lot of them will most likely be lifelong industry connections.
