Hello, I was hoping I could get some advice about what I should be focusing on during my undergraduate studies to make myself an attractive applicant for Financial Engineering programs. I am a sophomore Mathematics and Financial Economics double major with a Computer Science minor, and because I go to a small school I am able to to do a lot of Independent Studies, so I can design a lot of my own coursework. I have taken:
  • Calc I, II, III
  • Discrete Math
  • Principles of Comp Sci (we used Java)
  • Various Business/Accounting/Econ courses
  • All of my Gen Eds/Honors requirements
I have next semester:
  • Differential Equations
  • Linear Algebra
  • Probability
  • Principles of Comp Sci II (Java and Android)
  • An independent study on Game Theory and Strategy
  • Finance
I know I will have to take:
  • Investments
  • Financial Economics
  • Econometrics
  • Corporate Credit Analysis
  • Data Structures and Algorithms (C++)
  • Statistics (R)
  • Abstract Algebra
  • Real Analysis
So yeah, with this list in mind, I'm trying to figure out what the most important things I could learn are to make myself a better financial engineer. I want to focus on financial engineering for my Honors Research project, so I would love to squeeze in as much as I can before then. I am going to teach myself some Python, but other than that, what are the top 3 or so subjects I should be trying to take?
