Hello QuantNet community,
I’m an international student from Morocco currently pursuing a Master’s in Numerical and Applied Statistics (MNSA). My goal is to apply for the Baruch MFE program for Fall 2027 or similar programs in financial engineering. I have several questions about improving my profile, meeting GRE/TOEFL expectations, and building relevant experience.
Here’s my current profile:
1. Undergraduate Degree:
- Bachelor’s in Applied Mathematics (GPA: 11.33/20).
- Class GPA average: ~14/20.
2. Thesis and Certifications:
- Bachelor thesis: Computer vision project using Python.
- Certifications:
- Algorithmic Trading in Python.
- Machine Learning Specialization by Andrew Ng.
3. Current Master’s Program (MNSA Modules):
- Semester 1: Optimization with Python, Functional Analysis, Numerical Analysis, Fourier Analysis, Population Dynamics Modeling.
- Semester 2: Advanced Statistics, Programming and Numerical Simulation, Markov Processes, Control Theory.
- Semester 3: Stochastic Calculus, Data Mining Algorithms, Game Theory, Combinatorial Optimization.
- Semester 4: Internship and employment preparation.
4. Programming Skills:
- Proficient in Python (used for computer vision and algorithmic trading).
- Planning to enroll in QuantNet’s C++ Programming for Financial Engineering course.
5. GRE/TOEFL:
- I aim to meet Baruch’s expectations with GRE Quant: 168+ and TOEFL: 100+.
6. Work Experience:
- None so far.
7. Current Challenges:
- No completed projects beyond my bachelor thesis.
- Unsure if I should stay in my current master’s program or pause it to focus full-time on GRE/TOEFL, freelance projects, and becoming excellent in areas the university prioritizes (e.g., statistics, programming, and stochastic calculus).
8. Questions:
- How competitive is my profile for Baruch MFE or similar programs given my undergraduate GPA and lack of work experience?
- Would it be better to complete my MNSA program and use it to strengthen my application, or should I leave it to focus full-time on GRE/TOEFL, freelance projects, and excelling in key skills like statistics, programming, and financial modeling?
- Are there similar programs to Baruch MFE that I should consider, given my background?
- Is enrolling in Baruch’s Pre-MFE program a strong advantage for admission?
- What kinds of projects (or freelance work) should I focus on to strengthen my application for top MFE programs?
I’d greatly appreciate any advice from current students or alumni on how to strengthen my chances for admission to Baruch or similar MFE programs.
Thank you for your time!
