Career Transition from SWE -> QD (London)

Hey folks!

I'm wondering if CS bachelors -> SWE Fintech -> Quant dev is a reasonable career path? For context, I graduated with honors from a top 10 US uni majoring in CS with a minor in Statistics and ML, worked in my home country as a SWE for a bit, and am currently working at a reasonably successful fintech startup in London as a backend software engineer. I have always enjoyed employing more quantitative tools to my work/personal software projects and recently have been studying more about how the financial world operates. I think a career in quantitative software development is an ideal career choice for me, given big tech doesn’t pay as much in London.

My prep timeframe will be about a year and a half. Unfortunately, I have no quant experience. Will side projects (specifically trading systems, algos and the like) help at all? Would also be keen to know if it’s more worth the effort to self-study finance or low latency programming in C++.

Finally, If anyone knows of firms in London that take a chance on traditional software engineers, that would be super! Thanks a lot.
