I have been working as an engineer for 3.5 years. I have a BS and MS in structural engineering from Georgia Tech. I really don't like this type of engineering or this industry and think that a career in finance would better suit me. I like the investing/trading side of finance and have been leaning towards getting a quant degree over getting an MBA.

My ideal finance career would be something on the side of portfolio/asset management, market analysis, trading/investing, and the like. I have basic programming knowledge. I have used mainly Matlab and some python. I have fooled around with some algorithmic trading based on technical analysis and have actually created a number of trading algorithms in which I am currently backtesting and optimizing. I have partnered with a friend of mine that is better equipped at coding (he has a M. Comp. Sci.). We are currently working on our own trading platform in which we would implement the trading algo.

Given the current job market with respect to MBAfin vs. Quant, which direction would be the best route? What are the different type of jobs a quant can get if they don't end up at a hedge fund? What type of posistions would a MBAfin be chosen over a Quant?

I live in Atlanta so I would love to be able to go to Georgia Tech. However, I know they are not a top tier program (#14 in Nation). Should I even consider going to Georgia Tech if I want to get a Quant degree?

All comments and opinions are welcome. Thank you in advance!
