Hi all,

I have been an avid reader of the forum for 1-2 years. I will be applying for Fall 2025 programs.
I recently attempted GRE, and don't what happened to me, I got a mere 314 (168Q 146V). Doing the mock tests, I usually got ~320+.

Will the top programs reject me straight away with such low GRE scores??
Also, by the time I retake the GRE, many program deadlines might have already passed. I can reattempt the exam around ~7Dec.

I am too demotivated to even think straight.
Please, any sort of suggestions, will be highly appreciated.

I am a student who have taken GRE like you. I recall that GRE scores can be appealed for a re-evaluation. Here's some basic information I found about the GRE score review process:
GRE Score Review Application Timeframe and Scope:
The 6-month deadline for requesting a score review starts from the test date. Once you decide to apply for a re-score, you should promptly contact ETS via email and closely follow up on the progress. Be cautious not to submit duplicate applications, as you may be charged twice. The review applies to two sections:
  1. Essay (AWA)
  2. Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning
Most test-takers usually request a review for the essay section because it is subjective, whereas Verbal and Quant sections are objective and less prone to errors.

GRE Score Review Fees:
Before requesting a review, ensure you have successfully paid the fees:

  1. Essay review: $55
  2. Verbal or Quant review: $30
ETS accepts various payment methods, including credit cards, checks, and money orders.
Refund Policy for GRE Score Review Fees:
If a discrepancy is found during the re-evaluation, the fee will be refunded to you. However, if no errors are identified, the fee will not be refunded and will be treated as a review service charge.

Please note that this information is not from the official ETS website!! If you’re considering requesting a re-score, refer to ETS’s official guidelines for the most accurate and up-to-date information.
Alternatively, retaking the GRE after December 7 might also be an option to consider. Many programs continue accepting applications well into 2025. However, delaying your application solely due to the GRE score can understandably feel disappointing.
Best luck to you!

Hey, I too got the exact same score in the same split. I am also really scared yk but the programs which do not need gre, I am applying to them for sure, but some programs like georgia tech, yale and cmu have stated that they only care about quant scores generally, where as programs like cornell and columbia want a strong verbal score where I feel we are kinda cooked.

I am trying to compensate with strong essays and research papers. Also in my optional eassy I will mention the real reason why I screwed up which was due to some national level hackathon , etc etc.

Almost all programs only care about quant scores. You have absolutely nothing to worry about! Great job!

I wouldn’t retake it if I were you.
