How doable is it to land a new grad quant dev position without a quant dev internship?

Hi!

Title says it all.

Near every profile I've seen of new grads who break into this industry seem to already have completed a quant dev internship before graduating. Is this an unspoken requirement to break into the field out of school? Specifically if we're talking about the more notable HFT firms.

How doable would it be for someone that has decent school prestige (semi-ish target), a 3.7+, competitive coding experience, and a couple of internships under their belt (One at a F500 and the other at a FAAANG but not unicorn or quant dev level) to compete for new grad quant dev positions?

Any info would be appreciated!

of course it’s doable but it’s up to you to convince the interviewer why they should hire you over the many other candidates that did have a quant dev internship.
