Hi everyone,
Hope you're all having a wonderful day. I’m currently a second-year undergraduate at the University of Sydney, studying Advanced Computing with majors in Data Science and Financial Mathematics. My grades are decent, averaging around 85+ (High Distinction) in most subjects. While I don’t have any standout coding/math extracurriculars or awards, I’ve interned at a Big4 company and also do matched betting and positive EV betting on the side, with over $10k in profits (happy to provide receipts).
I’ve been exploring quant trading roles in Australia, especially in Sydney, but I’ve noticed that most job listings require Australian citizenship or PR. As an international student, I’m wondering if there’s still a realistic chance of landing a quant trading job here, or if I should pivot to other opportunities.
I’d love to hear from anyone in the industry or with experience in this area. Thanks!
(P.S: I do believe matched betting is a standout skill, as it involves analyzing numbers, performing quick mental calculations, and making fast, reactive decisions. However, I'm concerned that the gambling aspect might not come across well to recruiters.)
