I was just accepted to the Rutgers MQF program and I was wondering if anyone had any experience or knowledge on the differences between the two programs (MSMF vs. MQF). I am not sure if both were considered when RU was ranked top 10 in advanced trader or if it was strictly the MSMF program. Also, I was curious how the recruiting was around graduates of the MQF program vs the MSMF program. Thanks for any and all input!

There is no formal connection between the two programs, although they cooperate on certain initiatives. MSMF is offered by the Department of Mathematics, in partnership with the Department of Statistics, through the Graduate School-New Brunswick. The MQF program is offered by the Rutgers Business School, at the Newark and New Brunswick/Piscataway campuses. Other differences between the two programs include:
  • MSMF requires 30 credits and be completed in one year; MQF requires 48 credits and can be completed in two years.
  • Rates for MSMF tuition and MQF tuition.
  • MSMF admissions emphasizes mathematics prerequisites, as well as overall student record.
  • MSMF curriculum emphasizes mathematical finance and stochastic analysis, numerical analysis, computational finance with Matlab & C++, statistics, and allows 2 Business electives.
Rutgers Mathematical Finance Program Frequently Asked Questions

Hi everyone

Can anyone tells something about those two programs MQF and MSMF at Rutgers? I received both of their admission and have to submit the deposit immediately. But for me, I am confused about which one to choose. MSMF seems to be more 'quant' while MQF has a better job placement statistics in the past year. I need your suggestions. Thank you all so much.

Hi lcedge, I've also got an admit into the MQF program at Rutgers. Could you tell me where you found the job placement statistics for the program. It'd be great if you could share the info. Thanks.

placement success score at quantnet ranking.

Rutgers MQF:

Pros:

• Better placement rate
• Program is in business school
• Diverse course electives
• Higher Ranking at Quantnet

Cons:

• Job profile seems unattractive comparing to MSMF program for long term growth as per LinkedIn (Please correct me if I’m wrong)

• Coursework contains Financial Modeling course which may not useful for buy side quantitative trading

• 45 Credit program i.e. 15 course (10 core + 5 electives) this makes program expensive

Rutgers MSMF:

Pros:
• Highly ranked Mathematics department
• More rigorous
• Great buy side electives courses for e.g. High Frequency Finance and Optimal Control.
• People are working on buy side or atleast end up in risk management.
• Placement improved if you look at raw numbers compared to previous years.

Cons:
• 6 Core course
• Numerical Analysis II course seems like too much on theoretical side.
• Not Ranked on Quantnet.

Sorry in advance if I offended anyone with my d̶o̶g̶m̶a̶t̶i̶c̶ opinions.

Hello,

In terms of research the Financial Mathematics program is considered a bit more academic and less applied from people in the the program. The MQF program is ranked much or fairly higher here. Any other opinions on areas that get more of less focs from each program and / or things that are better or worse regarded job wise? Thaks.
