Perhaps many of you have seen this already, but it is too useful to not risk redundancy! This NY Times article briefly discusses a tool for fairly dividing rent amongst roommates. Here are the links to the two calculators: one, two
The idea here is that different people have different preferences and so they may place a different value on the different rooms in an apartment. They work their way through a simplex (n-dimensional triangle generalization) with different prices assigned to each vertex by choosing which room they would prefer at the given prices. The result is a solution where each roommate has chosen the final outcome and hence a fair division has been reached. It's not very long and pretty interesting.
