What's the purpose of the 'short waitlist' at Columbia?

Many people on this forum have experienced this for Columbia MAFN, but I was offered a place a day after being asked to submit my intention to stay on the waitlist.
I don't think it's truly a waitlist for these one-day buffer cases. (I applied very late btw)
Does anyone know what the purpose of this is?

Maybe you were on top of the waitlist and since Tuesday was the last day to submit decision responses for admitted candidates . You status changed in 24 hours
