Why do MFE/MFin/MSFM/MSCF programs care about other programs you've applied to?

This question to me came off as quite dubious. I can think of one reason/scenario when this may be useful- if a student is accepted into two or more programs, it might benefit the adcoms to get information about other deadlines.

Is this question commonplace in graduate school applications? Playing the devil's advocate here- how will this affect admission chances?

That’s crazy. I never thought of acceptance rate and yield rate as two balancing forces that can play a role in the acceptance of a candidate.

Will leaving it blank makes my application less appealing? Hinting I have something to hide kinda? Most schools seem to post it as a 'survey question'

And here you are, naively think the adcoms will want to know about your other applications and deadlines so they can accommodate you.

The more competitive it gets, the more acceptable and yield play a larger role.
