Advice for Career Selection

Dear All,

I newly joined to this group, i have some queries for all you seniors. Hope you will reply to these queries.

1. I have a Engineering Degree and Post Grad. Diploma in Thermal Power plant engineering along with 7 years of Experience in Thermal Power plant Engineering, so which courses i have to take to increase the possibility for selection for the course.

2. Has anybody accepted to MFE without any relevant experience.

3. Will it be a right move to take at this stage after having 7 years of experience in another field.

4. If i take CFA exams will it add weightage to my application.

Your reply in this regard will be highly appreciated.

1) A set of math sequence (Cal 1-3, Cal-based probability, linear algebra, analysis, PDE), C++ experience, good GRE score
2) Yes, provided you are well qualified in both math and programming background
3) Hard to say. It's a chance you have to take.
4) CFA L1 alone is not a big bonus given the time spent to prepare and pass. You have to decide whether to spend time focusing on other aspect of your application or the CFA.

Thanks you for your reply.

C++ experience means work experience or just C++ programming knowledge.

Is internship for 6 months to 1 yr in any financial related institutions will be considered?

Real life working experience as a C++ programmer is always better than just taking the courses in college. In the later case, make sure the courses are fairly recent or you plan to refresh it if taken years ago.
Some internship is more relevant than others. Doing accounting at a big investment bank may not count as much as a developer in a software company.

1) Calculus, PDE, Probability, Programming.

2) Yes, many people.

3) Given current environment most likely no. Nobody knows what is going to happen next in the field. Unless you in love with Finance keep your current career for now.

4) Yes, CFA will help to improve your application. But it won't change it dramatically.


C++ is not very relevant anymore as it used to be 5-7 years ago. Unless you want a programmer job in financial institution. But it helps to improve your application for some programs.
