Deadline Extensions

So far Columbia and Chicago have extended their deadlines to Jan 1st and Dec 31st respectively. Does anyone know why they would do this or if these extensions are related to each other in any way?

This happened few times in the past, usually because of lower than expected number of applicants.
My feeling is that we will see a drop in application number across many programs this year.

I think this trend is bigger than the quant finance field. I have also heard of drops in law/mba programs. I'm curious as to why this would happen as well. I can't imagine it's because of an improving economy.
