Has anyone taken the GARP ERP exam? If so, do you think it's worth the time/effort? I'm thinking about registering for the November exam. Any information about your experience would be appreciated. Thanks!

@nchiang: I helped screen the readings and judge the questions for the exam. The aim is to provide a structured approach to learning the basics of energy. If you're a petroleum engineer, it's probably a waste of time. In that case, you'd be better off getting an MFE. Like the FRM, it provides a platform from which one can do a fairly deep dive into the material.

Hello Mr. Abbott, I have a quick question. Do people who get an MFE generally obtain a ERM certification as well if he/she were interested in going to the energy risk route?

@rajanS: The ERM is new. I don't know of anyone who's done both. While there are certainly transactions that can combine securities and commodities risks, the two worlds generally lie on orthogonal rays. The best energy quant I know (Alex Eydeland) doesn't give a rat's hindquarters for most of the fixed income oeuvre. The best fixed income quants I know don't care about storage models or the modes of contango.

If you want to learn about commodities trading, learn about commodities first. If you're interested, PM me and I can recommend some reading material. Alternatively, the reading list provided by the ERM is pretty good, as well.

We were contacted by an ads agency pushing the FRM/ERM exam on behalf of GARP and according to the marketing material they sent me, you fit the profile of those who took the tests (under 35, 2-10 year of experience in risk management role).
We didn't return their proposal because of a lack of time.
