COMPARE School (NYU or Rutgers) or work????

Hi guys,

I've been accepted to Rutgers(MSMF) and NYU so far and am wondering if anyone can help me out with some concerns. First, I will graduate undergrad this May and with the current economy does it make sense to take on additional loans and pursue a math finance degree next year with no guaranteed job placement? Second, how would you compare Rutgers with NYU considering Rutgers is half price and I can live at home for Rutgers.

As Alain said, you need to think about a set of criteria important for you. Once you have a clear list, you can find a lot of info on quantnet about NY area universities.

That's a loaded question. Read the many, many posts on this forum on that subject.

It all depends, is it worth for you? For a lot of people here it is worth the effort. It might not be worth for you because you don't think you are going to be very good at it and you think you will end up in the middle of the pack and don't get a job at the end.... or it might be really worthy because you think you are an ace and be able to crush the competition. That decision is only yours. Nobody here will answer it for you.

BTW, I might be wrong but from the post, I think you are more of a former so, due to the current market conditions, stay as far as Quant Finance as you can. If you don't think that's the case, you can prove me wrong and then your decision is already made. Hence, there is no need for an answer.

From my experience in a financial modeling course...I asked the director of Lehigh's "MFE" program what these programs were about, and in reality, they're all a stamp to go work, and if you wish to become a top quant, you can't do that in one year.

So if you have work already, that's a massive opportunity cost by going for an MFE that may (or may not) be obsolete in the next five years.

Yeah thanks for the advice... I've sent out my deposit check
