"Of Human Bondage" is an excellent semi-autobiographical novel and "The Moon and Sixpence" a not-bad fictional account of Gauguin's life.

yeah, i loved the moon and the sixpence one.
interesting trivia about the authour - he used to be a spy (in Russia, no less)!

Didn't know that. He trained as a physician like Philip Carey -- the protagonist in "Of Human Bondage" -- but chucked it in to become a writer.
