The first semester is very difficult and you will be challenged mentally and physically (ie. lots of difficult work and little sleep). You really need to take a minute and think if you can handle this, as it is an extremely heavy workload and is done at a blistering pace.
Although I found it was great prep for the internship, since you will have the best work ethic in the office. The program also makes you into a self starter, nothing is spoon fed and you're expected to keep up, which again is excellent preparation for the work place.
Internship placement this year was 100%, roles were diverse including desk quants, model vetting, consulting and asset management. These were mostly in Toronto with myself and a couple other students finding roles abroad (London and Mexico respectively).
In terms of last year's full time placement, from what I've heard, all have found jobs in finance (risk, trading, asset management).
Thanks sooooo much! The information you provided is really helpful! My undergraduate major is financial engineering but I did not learn much about the programming language. Are the courses in the first semester mainly mathematical ones or programming?

Every course requires that you program, but don't worry as there is a long training period in August.
If you have little programming experience I would recommend that you do some extra work over the summer, I did the C++ course on quantnet which definitely helped.

@Andy Nguyen
Andy could you please tag this as a UofT MMF thread?

Interview experience pls see below.

I received the online interview invitation today, scheduled on Jan 30, which is this Friday. Email said "will be 20-30 mins, with technical and other questions".

I am a bit panic, since it is so close and dun't know how to prepare. Anyone can offer some help or share experiences ?

Also, I am international student and didn't take the so-called online assessment. Does UT changed the admission procedure this year?

Keep calm!

The interviewer is most likely to be admission officer who doesn't know a lot about mathematics. According to experience last year, some basic questions about stochastic processes might be asked, such as definition of martingale or brownian motion. You will be asked to rate your programming skills in C++, Matlab. Other questions are behavioral questions.

Thanks for sharing!!!!! I had the interview last Friday. As you said, two officers interviewed me and no technical questions asked.
Its like they just want to see if I can speak English. Just reference for those who are preparing for the interview. Mine session include:
why UT, why MMF?
Programming skills?
Reasons to be admitted, not to be admitted
Hobby in leisure time
What is happening in the world .....

Hello everyone,

Can I ask everyone for some of their statistics like GPA? Experience? I feel like my current cumulative average is simply too low to be competitive in the future (Will apply in 2 years)

here are my stats (I am entering 3rd year so this can change):
- 80% cum average, 82% major average (CS and Math), local canadian
- some volunteer experience

You can take a look at the official website. As far as I know, most admitted Mainland China students have very high GPA and top rankings, say higher than 3.7 out of 4.0, and this program require strong background in Mathematics.

Hi all,

What were the interviews like for the U of T MMF program last year? I have been invited to do one in the next week, and was wondering what to prepare.
