Hi,

Can anyone comment on UCB's admission process. By looking at profiles, it seems people with less than 2 yrs of work ex have absolutely ZERO chance. Also, it seems work exp in financial services industry is a must...even finance work ex in a non-financial industry doesnot seem to count at all...

However strong one's profile otherwise is, if above credentials are not there, it seems an impossible task. What do u ppl think?

Yes most of the people have work experience at major banks or financial firms, but cases do vary.

My friend who is in her final semester of undergraduate study just got accepted in the first round two months ago. She has no full time experience, only a somewhat related finance internship.

My other friend who just graduated from Berkeley MFE had no full time experience before as well. He went straight from undergrad with majors in cs and math (I don't think he even had work experience in IT).

My 3rd friend who is also in his final semester of undergrad got waitlisted. He had several internships in some Chinese funds and securities before. He majors in math and Econ with super high GPA.

Hi Veeann,

I agree with you but unfortunately, as far as I believe, the first two cases that you have mentioned seems to be valid only for domestic American nationals. Admission process seems to be a bit harsh on the terms of the overall profile when it comes to foreigners, and naturally so.

Americans form 20% of UCB MFE batch on a regular basis year-after-year.

Again, this is what i feel by looking at the profiles. I dont know for sure which nation your first two friends belong to.

There are quite a high amount of people who get in without tons of financial experience and who are not American nationals.
Actually, I think there are more foreigners without experience than Americans without experience in the program, and this year after year.
Most "unexperienced" admits do have 1 or 2 finance internships on their CV and come from the best math and CS programs in China, India, France, South Africa, etc...
And most of the time, they are far from being the least successful in the program.

Are you somehow connected with UCB? :P

These kids put me to shame. I was top in my high school, top 10% in college, and now I am barely at the average in my MFE class. ;)

does that really matter though?
I' d assume since MFE is a terminal degree, as long as you have a good GPA you can land a job and be done with it.
Or would you say that your position inside the program can significantly affect the type of jobs you get?

I don't think so, we are not even allowed to disclose our grades to recruiters (and the school never discloses to them either).
Just reminds me to be humble.
